Where it all started

It all started over 40 years ago when Barry Bishop began his career in building as a cabinet maker. Always striving for a challenge Barry set his sights on the building industry in the early 80’s and partnered up with various local builders cutting his teeth in housing and commercial building becoming a qualified builder.

Ready for the next challenge and wanting to build a sustainable future for his family, Barry decided to go it alone and with his wife Leanne at his side created Bishop Building Ltd in 2000. Soon after his two sons joined the business and attained their trade qualifications working at the coal face. They both now have important roles in the business that will carry the company into its second generation.

Seeking long term sustainability

Barry saw potential growth opportunities in larger more complex civil construction projects. One of the other benefits that attracted him to this was the opportunity to help improve the environmental impact industry was having on the country. Working for all of the big oil companies Bishops have improved spill containment in their storage terminals around the country. Key to this was the ability to undertake complex civil works on high hazard facilities while they were in operation. The outcome was providing a robust impervious solution that would last the lifetime of the terminal protecting the soils of NZ.

Since 2000 the diversity of the company’s capabilities has grown along with an increasing list of clients. From small beginnings Bishops have built a solid reputation as a trustworthy, reliable and committed civil construction company not afraid to take on the difficult stuff.
